How to Choose the Right Sleeper
Not All Sleepers Are Built Equal
Picking the right concrete sleeper is really about matching the product to the project.
What are you building?
Garden edging or a raised veggie bed where the wall isn't doing heavy lifting? An 80mm sleeper in any finish will do the job.
For retaining walls actually holding back soil — sloped backyards, shed pads, anything supporting a path or driveway above — thickness becomes a structural decision, not just a style one. Planning a fence on top? Factor that in from the start, it changes your post spacing.
In Queensland, walls over 1m generally need engineering and council approval, so sort that early on in your scope.
What look do you want?
Three families to choose from:
Plain Grey Smooth — the workhorse. Clean, cost-effective, perfect for walls hidden behind planting or fencing. Available in every thickness.
Decorative — textured and coloured concrete made to be seen. Smooth Charcoal, Paperbark and Storm Grey Sandstone, or Timber Look in Storm Grey and Plain Grey for the warmth of timber without the rot.
Decorative Sealed — the premium tier. Storm Grey Sandstone plus Country, Mocha and Smokey Timber Look, finished with a factory-applied sealer that locks in colour and shrugs off stains.
Most decorative sleepers are 80mm in 1600mm, 2000mm and 2400mm lengths. Smooth Charcoal goes up to 120mm if you need it.
How high is your wall?
All our structural sleepers are made to a minimum of 40 MPa concrete strength and B2 durability classification under AS3600 — built for Queensland conditions.
Thickness drives bending strength. As a rough guide:
- 80mm — walls up to around 1.4m
- 100mm — taller walls or wider post spacings
- 120mm and 140mm — heavy retention or significant loads above
For anything tall, consider tiering instead of one big wall. Two shorter walls with a planted terrace between them spreads the load, often keeps each tier under the 1m engineering threshold, and looks more natural in the landscape. Your engineer will confirm tier spacing so the upper wall doesn't surcharge the lower one.
Sealed or unsealed?
A sealed sleeper is the same structural product underneath — the seal is about looks and longevity, not strength.
Go unsealed if the wall will be hidden by planting or fencing, you're working to a budget, or you're happy for the finish to weather naturally and change colour when wet.
Go sealed if the wall is a feature — front yards, pool surrounds, alfresco areas — and you want the colour and texture to stay rich for years.
Pick Your Perfect Sleeper
Concrete sleepers come in 1600mm, 2000mm and 2400mm lengths, with common profiles including 200 x 80mm, 200 x 100mm and 200 x 120mm, so whether you’re edging a garden bed or building a bigger retaining wall, there’s a size that fits the job.
Keep it sleek with smooth sleepers, add warmth with timber-look, bring in more texture with block pattern, or level things up with a sealed finish.
Colour-wise, you can play it safe with grey, go sharper with charcoal, or choose feature tones like Storm Grey, Paperbark, Smokey, Mocha, Onyx, Oakey Brown and Heritage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find quick answers to common questions below.
Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?
In many cases, retaining walls under 1 metre don’t require approval, but this can vary depending on your local council and site conditions. For taller or structural walls, engineering and approvals may be needed. If you’re unsure, our team can point you in the right direction.
Do concrete sleepers suit both DIY and trade projects?
Yes. Concrete sleepers are an easy, low-maintenance option for DIY garden beds, edging and smaller retaining walls, but they’re also tough enough for heavier-duty landscaping and trade jobs. They’re a practical fit for everything from weekend projects to larger commercial and retaining wall builds.
How do I choose the right concrete sleeper?
It comes down to your wall height, site conditions, preferred finish and the look you want. If you’re unsure, we can help you narrow it down.
How do I work out how many concrete sleepers I need?
A quick way to get started is with our retaining wall calculator. It can help you estimate what you’ll need for your wall before ordering. If you want to double-check sizes, quantities or the right products for your project, our team is always happy to help.
Can I see the sleepers in person before I buy?
Absolutely. Visit us to compare colours, styles and finishes properly before making your choice.
