Block pattern sleepers come in 40MPa and 55MPa options, giving you a choice between standard-strength and higher-strength sleepers depending on your wall design. In plain terms, MPa refers to the concrete strength, but we'd never want you guessing which one's right based on looks alone.
Wall height, site conditions, soil load, surcharge and drainage all matter. For simple garden walls, the product range may be easy to compare online. For taller walls, loaded areas or anything near structures, driveways or boundaries, it's best to run the wall design past your local council and a certified engineer before ordering. How the wall system goes together
Block pattern sleepers aren't laid like blocks; the block or stacked-stone pattern is cast into one reinforced sleeper that drops between steel posts.
Each sleeper forms one horizontal course in a post-and-sleeper retaining wall. Sleepers come in set lengths, and each course is 200mm high. To estimate quantities, divide your wall length by the sleeper length to work out sleepers per course, then divide the wall height by 200mm to work out the number of courses. For posts, allow one post per span plus end posts, then check the exact post type and length needed for your wall height.
A low retaining wall generally needs steel posts set into concrete footings, drainage behind the wall and suitable backfill. Good drainage really matters here, as water pressure behind a retaining wall can cause trouble fast.
Unreinforced low retaining walls may be allowed in some situations, but height limits and approval rules vary by council and site conditions. Walls over the local threshold, walls near boundaries, driveways or structures, and walls carrying extra loads should be checked with your local council and a certified engineer before you build.
