Every door and window in a blockwall needs something to carry the load above it, and this is the block that does it. It's a U-shaped trough: lay a run across the opening, drop your reinforcing bar into the channel, fill with concrete and you've cast a lintel that's the same size and colour as the rest of the wall. Run the same block continuously along a course and you've formed a bond beam instead. Reinforcement size and spans must come from your engineer.
