The Millennium Trough is a self-watering planter with a built-in wicking bed. Fill the reserve, plant it out, and the soil draws water up to the roots as it dries. Herbs, vegetables, grasses and screening plants stay evenly watered between top-ups, which matters through a Queensland summer.

The trough is moulded from recycled plastic in a concrete-look finish. It has the look of a rendered planter at 1.7 kg (small) or 6.8 kg (large), so one person can fill, plant and move it. Low-profile wheels are built into the base. The drainage plug lets you drain the reserve before heavy rain or when moving the planter indoors.

Available in Anthracite, Pearl and Ash Grey. Buy the small, the large, or the set of one of each. The two sizes work as a pair on a patio, balcony or along a fence line.

How the wicking bed works

The trough holds a water reserve below the growing mix. Potting mix in contact with the reserve wicks moisture upward by capillary action, so plants take up water from below instead of relying on surface watering. Roots get consistent moisture, less water is lost to evaporation, and the drainage plug sets the maximum reserve level so the mix does not waterlog.

Small 59 x 25 x 25 cm 1.7 kg 26 L
Large 99 x 38 x 39 cm 6.8 kg 97 L

What to fill it with

Use a quality potting mix, not garden soil. Garden soil compacts and wicks poorly. Rocky Point Premium Potting Mix or Coco Pro (coir holds and moves water well) are the right choice. One 30 L bag fills the small trough; two 50 L bags fill the large. Blend in mushroom compost and a handful of Veggie Mate for edibles, top with sugar cane mulch to cut evaporation, and use a moisture meter to learn how often the reserve needs a top-up. Everything is in our Wicking Beds collection.
