How to Choose the Right Stepping Stone

Before you order, there are really only three things you need to nail down. Get these right and the rest is just picking a finish you like.

How to choose

Where are they going – pathway or feature area?

Start with the job they're doing. A garden path or side-access route needs stones spaced for a comfortable stride (around 600mm centre to centre is a safe starting point) and a surface with enough grip for wet weather. Pool surrounds and patios usually call for a cleaner, more uniform finish that ties in with the rest of the hard landscaping.

Feature zones – think a Japanese-style courtyard or a single statement piece in a lawn – give you the most freedom to go bold with shape and size.

How to choose

What size do you need?

Size affects both the look and how the path actually walks. As a rough guide, stones around 400–500mm work well for everyday garden paths, while larger formats from 600mm and up read as more architectural and feel more substantial underfoot.

If you're filling a longer run, larger stones mean fewer pieces to lay and a faster install. For tighter spots and stepper-style paths through gardens, smaller round or organic shapes usually look more at home. If you're not sure, send us your measurements and we'll help you work out quantities.

How to choose

Natural stone or concrete?

This is the big one, and it usually comes down to budget versus longevity.

  • Concrete stepping stones are generally the more affordable option and come in a wide range of shapes, colours and textures, including styles designed to mimic natural stone. They're a solid pick for everyday paths, rental properties or projects where you want a great look without stretching the budget. The trade-off is they're not as hard-wearing as natural stone over the long term and can fade, crack or weather more visibly with heavy use.
  • Natural stone stepping stones like bluestone, sandstone and granite cost a bit more upfront but are far more durable, hold their colour and character for decades, and only look better as they age. If this is a forever home or a high-traffic area you want to lay once and forget about, natural stone is usually the smarter long-term spend. Natural stone has typically more grip in wet situations as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions below.

What are stepping stones best used for?

Stepping stones are ideal for garden paths, side access, pool surrounds, patios and feature areas where you want to add structure without fully paving the space.

What’s the difference between organic and uniform stepping stones?

Organic stepping stones have a more natural, irregular shape for a softer look. Uniform styles, like round or rectangular stones, feel cleaner, more structured and a bit more polished.

Are stepping stones a good option for smaller gardens?

They are. Stepping stones can help create movement and definition in smaller spaces without making the area feel too heavy or overdone.

Do you stock both natural stone and concrete stepping stones?

Yes. Our range includes natural stone options like bluestone and granite, along with concrete stepping stones in a variety of shapes and finishes.

Can I come and view the stepping stones before I buy?

Absolutely. Visit our Eagle Farm warehouse to compare styles, colours and sizes in person before making your pick.

Are natural stone stepping stones worth the extra cost over concrete?

It depends on the project. Concrete is more budget-friendly and the look has come a long way, making it great for everyday paths. Natural stone like bluestone or granite costs more upfront but is significantly more durable and ages beautifully, so it's usually the better pick for high-traffic areas or long-term homes.
