How to Choose the Right FRP Composite Sleeper

Pick the Right Sleeper Without the Guesswork

We stock three trusted FRP composite ranges — SuperSleeper, TUFFPOLY and Beyond Timber — all built tough, all made to retain earth, all light enough to install by hand. Four quick questions and you'll know which one suits your job.

How to choose

What are you building?

FRP composite shines on retaining walls, raised garden beds, garden edging and steps where you want strength without the heavy lifting. Each sleeper weighs under 10kg — a tenth of a concrete sleeper — so no machinery, no sore backs, no awkward access dramas on tight or sloped sites.

If you're building a serious load-bearing wall over 1.6m, you're back in concrete sleeper territory. For anything below that, composite is faster to install, easier to handle solo, and won't rot, rust, warp or attract termites. Planning a fence on top? All three ranges support fence brackets — just spec it in early.

How to choose

What look do you want?

This is where the three ranges separate themselves:

SuperSleeper — the clean, modern look. Available in plain Grey and Woodland Grey with a smooth, contemporary finish. Perfect if you want your wall to recede into the design rather than make a statement.

TUFFPOLY — natural timber-look in two on-trend colours, Drift and Charcoal. The grain texture gives you the warmth of timber without the maintenance. Clever C-post design that doubles as capping for a sleek finish, and the timber-look posts match the sleepers for a fully integrated system.

Beyond Timber — timber-look in Slate Grey Midnight Grain or Driftwood Ash. A great mid-range option when you want timber character at a sharper price point.

How to choose

How high does the wall need to be?

This is where the three ranges diverge most. All are engineered to Australian Standards (AS 4678 — Earth Retaining Structures), but their height ratings differ:

  • Beyond Timber — walls up to 1.0m
  • TUFFPOLY — walls up to 1.2m
  • SuperSleeper — walls up to 1.6m, the tallest in our composite range

Your wall height drives the choice. For a 600mm garden bed border, any of the three will do the job and your decision comes down to looks. All retaining walls over 1m need engineering and council approval.

Tiering is worth considering. Two shorter walls with a planted terrace between them often beats one tall wall — it spreads the load, can keep each tier under the 1m engineering threshold, and looks more natural than a single big drop. Just make sure tiers are spaced far enough apart that the upper wall doesn't surcharge the lower one. Your engineer will confirm.

How to choose

What's the access like?

Concrete sleepers weigh around 75–80kg each, so installing a concrete wall almost always means a crane truck or excavator on site, plus extra crew to manage the install. That adds cost — and heavy machinery driving across lawns, gardens and driveways tends to leave a mess behind it.

Composite changes the maths. At under 10kg per sleeper, one person can carry and slot them into the posts by hand. No machinery, no extra crew, no torn-up lawn.

Tight or awkward access is where composite really wins. If your wall sits behind a house, down a narrow side passage, or anywhere a truck can't reach, composite is often the only sensible option — and the most cost-effective by a wide margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions below.

What are composite sleepers best used for?

Composite sleepers are a great option for retaining walls, raised garden beds, edging and general landscape projects. They’re especially handy when you want something strong without the weight and hassle of heavier alternatives.

Are composite sleepers easier to handle than concrete sleepers?

They are, and that’s one of the big draw cards. Their lighter weight makes them easier to move, easier to install and a whole lot friendlier for both DIY jobs and tighter-access sites.

Do you stock posts and accessories as well?

We do. Along with composite sleepers, we also stock matching posts, caps and other handy extras, so you can get everything sorted in one place instead of chasing bits all over town.

Can I use composite sleepers for DIY projects?

Absolutely. Because they’re lighter to handle, they’re a popular choice for DIY garden beds, edging and smaller retaining walls. If you’re not quite sure what suits your setup, we’re happy to help point you in the right direction.

How do I work out how many sleepers I need?

A good place to start is our retaining wall calculator. It’ll give you a rough estimate, and if you want help checking quantities or choosing the right products, our team is always happy to jump in.
